The original album consists of one continuous track, “Free Jazz” which had a fade in the middle in order to fit the music onto a standard LP. In the left channel there was Coleman himself on alto saxophone, Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Scott LaFaro on bass and Billy Higgins on drums while in the right channel are Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass and Ed Blackwell on drums. Bringing together a jaw-dropping group of musicians, Coleman split them into two quartets, recorded in a such a way that their music would come from one of two channels in the stereo format. It remains a bracing and thrilling album to this day and the Jackson Pollock painting that originally graced the cover is the perfect visual analogue to music contained within. Subtitled A Collective Improvisation by the Ornette Coleman Double Quartet, this remains on of the most contentious of Coleman’s early Atlantic Records catalog, inspiring the pre “hot box” Downbeat Magazine to print simultaneous five star and zero star reviews. Shortly after, the Corona crisis emerged and pushed the ensemble to a halt. The album was mixed by Tobias Bonello in November 2019. The recordings reflect the nervous-system-like mechanics of the ensemble - communicating parallel simultaneous ideas, instantly transforming abstract chaotic senses into time-structured graphical or melodic movements. Most musicians did not play together beforehand and were all separated in 3 different recording boxes. In 2019 Or Solomon organised the first recording session entitled ‘phone boxes’ of (what to become) the orchestra. Lightning Orchestra is an exponential ensemble counting 9 musicians engaged today. L-O sessions are experimental setups to explore its own diversity and the moving new realities of one's experiences, as musicians, as individuals, and as an ensemble, interrogating improvised music, its needs and perceptions. Or Solomon & Lightning Orchestra All members of Berlin based Lightning Orchestra are international music artists expressing their emergency for a free and independent voice.
